220 Swift

220 Swift. The action is a Remington BDL, converted to single shot with a steal block filling the magazine well. A Rifle Basix trigger set right at 1 pound replaces the factory trigger. The stock is a McMillan Sako Varminter with a marbled camo finish. The barrel is a Blackstar,  27", 1/14 twist, number 7 profile. On top of this is a Leupold Vari III 6.5-20 x 50 in Warne mounts and bases. This rifle weighs in at about 11 pounds with scope, but unloaded. All smithing work was completed by Peter Van Meurs.

This rifle shoots 50gn Ballistic Tips and 50gn Vmax bullets extremely well which gives me two very accurate choices, both with excellent terminal performance. Right now I am getting very good accuracy from 40gn Vmax and Ballistic Tip bullet with Varget powder. This load is a real hotrod at around 4400 fps. I have yet to try the 40gn bullets on varmints, though I have high hopes for this load. I do pretty standard case preparation on this rifle, though I neck turn cases for concentricity (the chamber is standard SAAMI dimensions so I am only removing enough material to get uniform necks), de bur flash holes and uniform primer pockets. I initially tried to neck size the cases but have found that cases must be full length resized after each firing, due to the body shape. I love the Swift, but a more sensible choice would probably be the 22-250 AI.

I am also in the process of having a 243 Ackley Improved barrel and a 17/PPC short barrel chambered for this action. More info as the barrels are completed.

The above photo was the surprise result of a session at the range to verify my trajectory with the 40gn Vmax bullet out to 300 yards. At 300 yards, the shots got blown off to the right a little more than I expected, with one shot going right through the center of the upright punching a hole of about .350". The frame is only mild steel, but that's not the result I would have expected to see.
